lol to this opening, it's so Killjoys. Also lol at Dutch tipping the sex worker. With paper money! I didn't actually think they had paper money (vs electronic) have we seen it before?
Fancy instant brain death guns! Possibly actually invented by Fancy.
Team Awesome Force is kind of showing off in this section describing the mission, and I always find their cockiness entertaining, but I feel like hubris never completely works out on this show. Fall incoming?
*mission completely goes to shit with the first Hullen*
There it is.
Fancy Lee, designated asshole, volunteering for the most dangerous part of the shitshow, as usual. Sean Baek's adorable. "You're in remission." This holding cell scene is really great, acting-wise. (And on a different show would totally be between two white dudes.)
Dutch is in the trash chute! Space princess shout out.
"We'd love to tell you. Super chatty guys." "Super chatty."
This is really the first season of D'avin and Johnny having a Dutch/Johnny style comfortable team-y relationship, and I love it. First season they still had all that awkward history plus brainwashing, second D'avin was getting his groove back but Johnny was off in Pawterville. Now they're just two funny, chill bros saving the galaxy together. Or trying to, anyway.
Delle Seyah, outgunned by the crazy yet completely turned on. The Afterbuzz podcast described Aneela as a rich LA teenager used to getting whatever she wants no matter how ridiculous, and now I can't unsee it.
Messy in places but in terms of longterm structure, an excellent episode five I think. We're halfway through and the whole thing is spinning out of control for our heroes. Theories on the candidate(s) for gallant end of season sacrifice? Mine is Turin but maybe that's too obvious.
I just caught up on all five episodes last night, so was this the one where D'avin went up to Zeph and pulled off his shirt, only to have her apply the leads to his head instead and he had to put the shirt back on? Whenever it was: Ha!
The scene in "the box" was the only one that really didn't work for me, simply because every single piece of it was so very predictable. The second Fancy pointed out all their controls and asked what their prisoner could do, I knew nearly every beat that would follow (though I didn't call Turin's specific hesitation). I feel like these characters aren't usually so genre-blind, and I kept waiting for a subversion that never came.
Shouldn't the other commanders have had a minute of "Wait, if people can be 'cleansed' of this goo, why aren't we trying that first instead of just executing all our own people who have it?" Too late now, since everybody went boom, but still.
I also wish they could have saved the IA woman, even if she was left in critical condition or something. Though I'm not opposed to maybe seeing her having been "saved" by an application of goo and watching her trying to take down the system from the inside, as it were. (I think this is the point of the narrative where they start making everything go wrong for the heroes to raise the narrative stakes. I picked a bad time to catch up and strand myself in a one-episode-per-week rate, because the stress gets to me!)
There was a ton I liked, by the way (like all the banter!), and I figured I'd remember specifics long enough to write it up here. Oops. Maybe I was put through Johnny's brain-scrambler at some point, because my memory is terrible. Though I do still know what I had for breakfast ....
D'avin taking off his shirt for flimsy reasons will never not be funny.
Shouldn't the other commanders have had a minute of "Wait, if people can be 'cleansed' of this goo, why aren't we trying that first instead of just executing all our own people who have it?"
But they don't have a current cleansing method, do they? Other than the one in D'avin's pants, but that's temporary. But they don't know where the other master sources are, and holding a ton of Hullen captive while they figured it out would be a challenge. So it would just have been time spent explaining that?
Okay I've been corrected on this point, we got one line on how apparently they somehow have a map to all the plasma pools? No idea when that happened.
I was sad to lose the IA woman cause she was cool, but I thought it fit the theme as I saw it (blurred combat lines and pointlessness of war).
I think I just happened to be in a good mood this weekend! There were definitely some plot question marks, like why D'avin lets any Hullen get the jump on him with his superpower. I assume the Doylist reason is he'd be too overpowered, but it could stand to be explained in universe.
For me, though, it was just really jarring to see these RAC supervisors, people who were targeted as actually caring about their underlings and organization, presented with a "kill them all!" plan followed by telling them that it's possible to reclaim (some) tainted personnel and not see them have any conflict. I know it would've taken time, but I think that's more of a flaw of the setup than anything else, because I was distracted waiting for them to object and then wondering why they didn't. I'm not sure if there was a good fix -- maybe have Turin's "Yeah, he was exposed but is all better now" followed by a simple "because we got to him in time" or something that at least implies the others are beyond saving? But they just didn't address it at all, maybe by choice, and I couldn't help noticing, is all.
No, you're not the only person I've seen to comment on this and I think I've actually been convinced! I was originally coming from the pov that curing everyone would be pretty hard, since it was hella hard in the S2 finale, but I totally missed that that's what Johnny was mapping. (How is still a bit of a question to me, but. *shrugs at show*)

Right? Agreed on all counts. And it made no sense for all the reasons these scenes never make sense. Why would Fancy even need to go in there? I kept waiting for Turin to have a revealed plan.
I like cleansed Fancy, and I like Turin. I want them to fix that relationship.
And man oh man I wanted them to save the IA woman. I love what a hardass she was, and I want Dutch to have more women in her life who can hold their own against her but aren't antagonists. All the women around her, especially since Pawter's death, are either villains or subordinates.
Oh, she would've been awesome as an imperfectly aligned ally -- a tough woman on the side of "good" who wasn't necessarily A Member Of Dutch's Team, and who sometimes continued to work at cross-purposes. (I need a fixit fic!)
Every now and then there's a moment in a TV show that makes me say "ah! this show has a female showrunner and/or this episode was written by a woman." That, and the sex worker's response, was absolutely one of those moments for me. I'm pretty sure this one was both (written by ShernoldEdwards).

Everything went to shit in this episode, didn't it? The look on Dutch's face when the RAC ship blew up... It was sheer panic, and I don't think I've ever seen that from her before. She's spent all this time preparing for war without fully grasping that they're already in one, and they're losing, badly.

I love the dynamic between these two. Their scenes together are electric.

Yesssssss. Dutch knows how to fight individual bad guys who throw punches, but she does not necessarily know how to fight evil queens who have spies and endless armies, and I don't think the scope of the difference had completely penetrated yet. I'll be interested to see if the future plans get a little more guerilla, both tactically and emotionally. Assuming that anyone still human would thereby be naturally committed to their cause was a pretty big mistake, despite the RAC's cultlike catchphrases.
